Newark, NJ – As you know pickleball is in trend in the US, and soon pickleball enthusiasts will get a new place to play indoor pickleball in Newarkers.
Last Monday night, the city council approved a special use permit that allows The Picklr to open in the former Kmart building located at The Grove in Newark.
“We’re excited to be bringing a cool, just different industry of sport and recreation to the Delaware tri-state area,” said James Maguire, a Middletown resident who is co-owner of the Newark franchise.
The 40,700 square-foot pickleball club will facilitate 12 indoor pickleball courts, drink walls to do practice, a pro shop, a lounge, locker rooms, and community rooms for events. It will open from 6 a.m to midnight daily.
The facility will host leagues, camps and tournaments, and pickleball lessons for beginners.
The Picklr hopes to partner with local high schools, the Newark Senior Center and other organizations.
“We want to bring people together,” Maguire said. “Those of you who have played pickleball, this is a community social event. It does get competitive, but we want to have fun, bring people together and help out the community.”
Plans for The Picklr drew strong support from city council members.
